How Often Should You Trim Your Hair?
A honest take on trim timing — dusting versus a real reshape — so you are not in the chair every four weeks for no reason.
There is no universal number. “Every six to eight weeks” is a salon slogan that fits some hair and over-services others. The better question is: what is growing out, and what do you want it to do?
If you wear a shape
Bobs, fringes, and anything that hits a precise line on your jaw or collarbone need more frequent trims. Gravity and your cowlick do not care that you were busy. A bang trim between full cuts is cheaper than waiting until the fringe is in your mascara and then asking for a miracle.
Lauren would rather see you for twenty minutes of fringe than rebuild a shape that has already collapsed.
If you are growing it out
Growing out does not mean never cutting. It means cutting less, with intent. A dusting — taking the wispy, see-through ends so the weight line can move down — keeps the hair from looking longer and thinner at the same time.
Skip the trim for a year and you often get a shelf of old color, a wad of knots at the nape, and a “why doesn’t it look like the photo” moment. A trim is not the enemy of length. Split ends traveling up the shaft are.
Texture changes the calendar
Fine, straight hair shows a blunt line fast; it also shows damage fast. Curly and wavy hair can hide a few extra weeks, then suddenly look triangular. Color-treated hair — especially lightened lengths — often needs the ends watched more closely than the root.
If your hair is freshly lightened, ask for a dusting plan at the color visit so you are not surprised six weeks later.
Between visits, what you can do
- Stop chasing length with daily high heat.
- Detangle from the ends up, especially when wet.
- If a rubber band is leaving a bald dent, switch to a silk scrunchie and a looser hold.
None of that replaces a pair of shears. It just means the shears have something worth cutting.
A practical rhythm
For a lot of Cosmo guests, a full cut every 10–14 weeks plus bang trims as needed is plenty. Lived-in color and long layers can stretch further. A severe bob cannot. Bring a photo of the last haircut you loved, not a celebrity with a different density than yours, and we will set a rhythm that matches your actual head.
