What to Bring to a Color Consult

How to walk into a color consult ready — photos, history, lifestyle — so the formula fits your hair instead of a swatch book.

A good color formula is half chemistry and half conversation. The consult is where Lauren learns whether you want to look like yourself on a Tuesday, or like a photo you saved at 11 p.m. Those are different jobs.

Photos help. Context helps more.

Bring two or three pictures: one of your hair now (daylight, no filter), one of a result you like, and — if you have it — one of the last color you actually enjoyed wearing.

Say what you like in the photo. “The depth around the face.” “How the ends look almost like the sun did it.” “That it still looks expensive grown out.” That is more useful than “I want to be her.”

If you hate a previous color, bring that too. Failure is data.

Tell the truth about the last two years

Box color, a gloss at a chain salon, a bleach-and-tone on vacation, henna from a kit — all of it lives in the hair even when you cannot see it. Lightener does not care that you “barely used” a drugstore brown in 2024.

Write down what you remember:

  • When you last colored, and whether it was professional or at home
  • Whether the hair has been lightened, including highlights
  • Any bond treatments, keratin, or henna
  • How your scalp behaves (sensitive, oily, color-stains-the-part)

Nobody is grading you. Surprise chemistry in the bowl is worse.

Lifestyle is part of the formula

Be honest about heat, workouts, pool days, and how often you will actually tone at home. A high-maintenance icy blonde and a full-time sun-and-sweat calendar are not enemies, but they need a plan — gloss appointments, a hat, a different target tone.

Southern California light is a third stylist. A formula that looks perfect under salon LEDs can read warmer in Temecula parking-lot sun. We mix for the light you live in.

What “yes” and “not yet” sound like

Sometimes the hair can do the photo in one visit. Sometimes it needs a rebuild: cut the wrecked ends, deposit a kinder depth, then paint. A consult that ends in “not this month” is still a success. Forcing a level-10 blonde through previously boxed brown is how hair starts feeling like straw.

If the answer is a staged plan, you will leave knowing the steps, the why, and what the in-between will look like. That in-between should still be wearable. You have to go to work.

After you book

Come with dry, relatively clean hair unless you are told otherwise — product at the roots can hide the true color, and soaking-wet hair is harder to read. Wear a shirt you do not mind speckled. Eat something. Color visits are unhurried at Cosmo on purpose; you should not arrive already depleted.

The formula starts when the conversation does. Bring the real story, and the bowl can meet you there.
